Dell Inspiron Zino HD Piano Black Desktop PC (Windows 7 Home Premium) - User Review

I purchased this system with the express purpose of replacing my DVR. Dell gave me the impression this was an Home Theater PC and includes an HDTV tuner as an option. Note: I am using a dual-core processor, 2GB of memory, and the HD3200 video card.

As a normal PC it seems alright, not that I've done much with it in that regard. Big apps seem to be a bit slow to load, but my desktop is a fast quad core system w/ a 10K RPM hard drive.

Since my intent is to replace my DVR, I hooked up the tuner (hauppage USB HD Tuner) and started Windows Media Center. All drivers installed and WMC quickly located all of my cable channels. That's the last of the good news.

I started by using 1080i resolution on my monitor (an HDMI LCD TV). The video was completely unacceptable. It probably dropped 10-20 frames for every one it displayed. The system performance was so bad it was excruciating to get out of Windows Media Center.

If I put the video 720p mode, I can watch TV with just a little skipping or delay; however, if I bring up the TV guide at the same time the TV is running, forget it. The TV stutters horribly.

Now that I have the system and the problem, I am seeing reports of this problem popping up in audio/video forums (ugh, why didn't I check there first before buying this). In fact, CNET reviews this systems and the CON is it will not work in HD mode with the integrated video card. (The link to the review is removed by amazon, but google "cnet zino review").

I've tried to resolve the problem with tech support, but so far they haven't been able to make it past basic troubleshooting - ie. I haven't made it past the first layer of support technicians.

Hopefully I can return this tomorrow. If not, you might want to watch craigslist for it. I have no use for it if it can't handle HDTV.

Final Note?: No thanks to Dell I have found that by using the VGA connection to my TV (NOT the HDMI connection), I can get HDTV to work in 1280x760 mode (the max resolution of my TV's VGA port) fairly well. All digital signals from cable (QAM signals) work perfectly. For some reason the analog signals still stutter, but I don't care about those.

I cannot stress how disappointed I am with Dell over this. The video card cannot be field upgraded. The returns department (I tried to send this back and get one with the correct video card) said 'No returns after 21 days. Thank you, come again'. The tech support people were clueless. I don't know how ma and pa Kettle get their systems running. You have to have a computer science degree 1/2 the time to get consumer stuff working right.

Final Note!: Dell is taking it back. Perhaps someone there also read the cnet review. Just in time as the VGA port went on the fritz this weekend and now no display port is usable.

Epilogue: After searching the market I couldn't find another system with a form factor I liked so I ended up repurchasing a Dell Zino with the upgraded video card (ATI HD4330) and 4GB instead of 2. This system *works* for displaying HDTV broadcasts. Unfortunately it cost significantly more than the base system. It's had some odd glitches (like audio via HDMI has occasionally stopped requiring a reboot), but it has been OK. OK is about the best I can say given the headache this whole project became.

Ordered this computer for Christmas. It's a great all-in-one. Perfect size for our small office and, so far, seems to run well with no glitches. However, I checked the specs on this after I got it set up.
This is the second Dell p/c purchased in our family. This one was purchased last June. Love it. No problems or issues with either product. No noise from fan. This worked right out of the box, was very easy to set up and looks and works as well as advertised - or better. The resolution on the screen is a big improvement and the all-in-one aspect gives you most of the advantages of a desktop with the advantages of small footprint of a laptop.
The keyboard could be a bit better but overall, this is a tremendous value.
It has quite a number features some of which I had no idea came on this computer, of which you will find are both beneficial and fun.
I love this computer but I really would benefit if you could send me an owner's manual. There are so many features and the online help is just not getting it.

ASUS Eee Top ET2203-B0017 21.6-Inch Black All-in-One Desktop PC (Windows 7 Home Premium) - User Review

I was looking for a replacement desktop for sometime and finally decided that what I needed is an all-in-one. It is great to have only one cable, just for power. I was so sick and tired of the total six cables tangled up with the desktop - 2 power cables (1 for CPU and 1 for monitor), ethernet, VGA, keyboard and mouse.

All this made the setup a breeze and not to mention if I ever want to move it to another location, it will be a piece of cake. No problem at all to start Windows 7 and to install several updates. Connecting to my home wireless network was also effortless. It runs very quiet too.

I did some research on Sony all-in-one, but can't seem to justify the price tag - double of a regular desktop. I am very happy that I found this Asus model. I paid about $100 more (after the rebate) than I would otherwise with desktop of equivalent configuration. But it is well worth it. The design, I agree, it's not as pretty as the Sony, but much better looking than the HP Touch models.

I don't need to describe this computer generally--just read the specs. Here are some particulars, though:

It's not the fastest, due to (i) its notebook processor, (ii) its notebook hard drive, (iii) its notebook video chip, and (iv) the 32-bit Windows 7 version that can use only 3GB of its 4GB of RAM
All that being said, it's fast enough for the average user. I've watched full HD movie files on it and the fan doesn't even spin up. Can't comment on 3D gaming though.
The speakers sound alright, especially once you turn on all of the SRS effects. Also there's no noise when you use headphones, a nice change from my latop.
The mouse is too small for my hand, and my hands are not that large. The wireless keyboard tends to turn off (to save power I assume) and usually I have to hit a key to wake it up again before typing. It has no caps/num/scroll lock lights (they're virtual, on the screen). Also, the keyboard is maybe half the width of the computer, contrary to what you see in the photo.
It doesn't include a normal Windows re-installation DVD; rather it's a recovery image that includes all of the installed BS.
The 22" widescreen is very reflective but otherwise nice. It has an HDMI input and is full 1080 resolution so you could plug your xbox or bluray player in and use it as a monitor.
The 2.5" hard drive makes little whining noises which are always audible since the rest of the machine is so quiet. Annoying.
Overall, despite its flaws, this is a versatile machine especially if you get it for the $690 after mail-in-rebate price.

I have not noticed anything negative about this machine. It exceeded my expectation. Highly recommend it.

I like its clean profile (HP looks too busy to me as far as its looks go). We spend a lot of time in our kitchen around our island so I put ths PC in the kitchen as an "Appliance" because:

As a jukebox with windows media center. Shows all my albums with album art and cool User Experience. I can navigate with touch and play/queue with another touch. Friends love it when I throw a party.
I have connected this PC to cable jack with a TV tuner stick using its USB port in back. Again with Windows media center, I can watch TV programs browse program guides, record programs with its touch screen interface or remote control. I now have additional TV and DVR in kitchen.
Since it has built in microphone and speakers, I also use it like a phone (using Skype). One touch and I am talking to a friend over a video chat.
It plays all our pictures and videos slide shows when not in use.
Of course it is a full blown Windows 7 pc as well that kids use when googling or playing games.

Comes with wireless keyboard and mouse. So the whole layout it clutter free. All for 640 dollars. I think at this point in technology evolution I cannot expect any more for the price.

The only complain I have so far is that the space bar on the keyboard has to be typed with a bit more force to register. minor issue.

My wife absolutely loves this computer. She wanted a laptop, but they were too expensive for what I was getting. I found this desktop and she really didn't want a desktop, but she absoltely loves this one. Its small and compact. There are only three parts...the monitor, keyboard and mouse. It looks very neat and clean on the desk and its not too bulky. The preformance is great because it is a desktop and we don't really have to worry about overheating as with a laptop.My wife prefers to work with Windows XP so that was a plus. With most laptops...at the time...they only came aith Windows Vista which we all know is terrible. I would have had to pay an extra $179 to get a laptop with Windows XP over Vista. Anyway, if you're looking for a great entry level PC...for the price...you connot possibly beat this one. Conclusion... price...A+...amenities...B+...Look...A+...performance...B. We are also purchasing a second one for our daughter to replace an older one she has.

Everybody loves this computer! It is a real show stopper with the all-in-one design and the creative touches. The designers did a great job with this and all my friends insist on playing with it.

I got the computer for my Mother-in-Law (whom I adore) because she has been a computer phobe and the touchscreen, the wireless keyboard and mouse, and the installed HP apps really lend themselves to breaking down some of those barriers.

But, most of all, I love the support that I got from the HP techs on a networking issue that I had due to another product. These guys spent hours on the phone with me troubleshooting what turned out to be another manufacturer's problem. They were incredibly knowledgeable on lots of aspects of the system and helped me for a long time on Thanksgiving evening.

I'm not sure why everyone else's reviews are so negative. The machine boots up so quickly--it goes from asleep to functional in 5 seconds. Literally. I haven't played with the touch screen apps a whole lot but this machine does a great job ripping and burning media discs. It has a fast hard drive and optical drive and provides flawless playback of DVD movies. I haven't used the TV tuner yet but my sister has on her computer and loves it. DVR without having to pay a monthly fee! Windows 7 doesn't feel that different from Vista, and regardless of whether you like it or not, this is a great machine. My only real complaint is that the super-thin keyboard has a slightly different layout of the delete key (it's huge!) and it throws an experienced typist off for the first little while. Other than that, an incredible, relatively portable machine for less than a decent laptop.

The days of people opening up their computers and tinkering with the parts inside have passed. I worked at a laptop repair facility for years and used to be a stalwart opponent of Macs, all-in-ones, and laptops for people who did not need portable computing. Recently, however, I have changed my mind--computers are so cheap and peripherals are advancing so quickly compared to the processors, RAM, etc. that computers have become replaceable as a unit and not cost-effectively serviceable with replacement parts. I bought this computer to replace my "serviceable" home-made unit and absolutely love it. It will get me by for the next 3-5 years, and then I will replace it as a unit instead of trying to "upgrade" it one part at a time. The real appeal of this computer, besides its looks, is that there is only one cord--a power cord. It has made my office much more tidy and pleasant to work in. I can move the computer to a different room in the house by unplugging its one cord and carrying it.

I only use my computer for word, web browsing, movies, and hosting my media collection. I depend on my computer to run these apps at once, quietly, and fast. This is something that is done by most well built computers. For the first few days I had the computer the touch screen is quite fascinating, but after a while you tend to question the actual usefulness of this. Most of the time you will find yourself using your mouse and keyboard instead of touching the screen, quite frankly it's faster. The touch screen has odd response time in some situations, but it is not a bad computer. The best is the touchsmart application. You can run your music, photos, web, video, through a program which focuses on touch use (in fact it is easier to touch than dragging the mouse around). The program reminds you why you brought a touch screen instead of a another computer with more tech and less price. Touchsmart also has special built applications to netflix, pandora, hulu, and can be personalized to add youtube and any other application you want. Another thing about the touchsmart which most people don't bring up is the space saving it provides. This was the reason I brought it instead of a normal windows computer. The monitor/hard drive are connected and the keyboard and mouse are wireless (you don't need batteries).

we got this to replace a cluttered noisy desktop, it has no fans = no noise and is very compact, and at 1920x1080 true HD for the 23" screen, its very productive workspace, very fast.

Problem... It makes such a good media center that there is family competition to use it. It seems to work wireless "n" speeds so Netflix and hulu are stutter-free prefect, its bigger than the kitchen TV. Someone is always using it.

at 1200 bucks it was 2/3 the cost of the system it replaced.

my advice: buy 2 of them.

edit update - we just ordered #2 since the first one never left the Kitchen & Livingroom area, where it will likely live out its useful days so Dads that buy it, set your expectations - Recipies, Netflix, Hulu, Email and facebook, and skype 2 way video ( hi mom! ) youteube, ABC full length shows and Vevo ( Vevo looks amazing ) will rule along with the touch screen magazine catalogs and lookbooks at ctndigital. youtube of this touchsmart doing amazing things in flash [...] it wont be much used for real computing - its all family entertainment.

One of the reasons that I purchased this computer was a previous good experience with an HP desktop. I have had Gateways, Dells, and Sonys, by my HP desktop outlasted them all, and I never had any trouble with it, until the end (after 3 1/2 years) when one of the hard drives started to go. Anyway, I had been watching the Touchsmart line since they came out, and was waiting for the price to fall. Well, it finally did, and even after they improved the touch system (Go to [...] for a thorough review if you have the time). Getting back to this purchase... This thing is a dream. I was so anxious to get it started, that I opened it and set it up on the kitchen table. I was connected to my home network in only a few minutes, AND with only one cord - the power cord. The touch system is outstanding, and some of the programs that go with it, the Touchsmart Home programs, are awesome(and yes, I know that word is overused nowadays, but stupendous seemed kind of silly). After I transferred over my iTunes library and my family photos, the computer imported them into Touchsmart, and they became soooo easy to work with. Also, I never realized how many programs are optimized for touch, but i'm beginning to find more and more of them. It looks like the wave of the future. It might be time to climb on board. Oh yeah, this has Windows 7, which is light years beyond Vista... And the built-n Webcam is great as well... And did I mention that you can use voice command when working with your photos in Touchsmart Canvass? Oh, and the picture quality is stunning when viewing HD internet TV, Hulu, or Podcasts, and I haven't even set up the TV tuner yet... Also, Hulu is built right in to the Touchsmart Home programs...

rough n ready "The General" (California)

Bought this as the family computer for slide shows, email, and general tasks. Worked right out of the box no problem. As usual the transfer of files and programs from the computer being replace (an HP media center computer) was a lot more complicated than it should be. However, the new computer is well a executed piece of hardware, can run lots of programs at once and the screen is simply beautiful. The touch screen is fun. The keyboard is very slim and quiet and slips conveniently under the computer. Have had no freezes or BSOD's at all with lots of installs going on (W-7). One very nice feature is the light. Only thing that stops if from getting 5 stars is that it would have been nice to have the option of hooking up a second monitor.

This all-in-one seems like a great deal. And as a PC, its great--fast and easy to use.

But, after one month of using it, I've found that the touchscreen features are more of a gimmick rather than a usable interface. I end up using my mouse for everything. If you check out professional reviews, you'll see that they echo this sentiment. But thats not a big deal.

However, what forces me to rate this computer 1 star is the TV-in port. We bought this computer so that it could also be a HD TV. However, when moving the computer, we had to unscrew the cable and the TV-in port broke. HP refuses to exchange it or pay for a repair. They claim that we must've used too much force when unscrewing it. Not to sound petulant, but I'm a 5-foot, 90 lb, female engineer. If I could break it accidently by "force" there is a SERIOUS error in design.

So, to summarize...

Monitor: 5 stars

PC: 4 stars

TV: 0 stars

HP customer care: VERY VERY FRUSTRATING

We needed a new PC when our Dell Dimesion 8400 gave up the ghost. I wanted a small tower as I was happy with my setup of screen, printer, and scanner; my wife wanted a 'cleaner' look. I was leary of an all in one product, but have to say this HP is the best PC I have ever owned. It's 23 inch HD monitor is superb, and essentially wireless with a wireless keyboard and mouse. We added an Epson all-in-one which connects wirelessly though our home network (that's another issue) and it's a clean, wonderful look.

The Touchscreen is nice, don't really need to use it, but it's fun. A fingerprint magnet.

We'll see how well this holds up.

Disadvantages to consider: Limited upradeability for RAM, additional peripherals would need to be installed via USB (e.g. additional drives), and if the screen goes out, you are in for a repair. So far, so good.

I know some people will use this aa a small form pc for everyday use, but I'm only reviewing this from a HTPC perspective. Right now its connected to my network wirelessly and Im streaming my movies to my flatscreen tv. Its great for viewing Hi def content, I thought theres no way a processor this slow could ossibly playback through HDMI clearly. I was pleasantly surprised, after a bit of setup it streams ANY format thrown at it through HDMI. I loaded windows vista on this because of windows media center wich really helps with managing all my movies, music and pictures. The only issue is viewing flash video online, dont get me wrong it plays the video reasonably well but you will notice the stuttering at times on the video. Flash currently is not configured to run on these new processors so viewing flash online will be an issue until flash 10.1 wich will be released some time early next year. The processor isnt strong enough to handle high end computing tasks like video editing or photoshop, but this isnt what this pc is made for. Coupple of notes about setup, it comes with windows xp home but that OS may not provide as much sophistication as most people would like, I installed vista on this pc pretty easily. You must have either an external dvd drive or a usb drive with at least 4 giggs of available space. If your using a usb drive you must load the OS dvd on a diferent pc and then copy the files over to the usb drive, afterwards connect to this pc and start setup while in windows xp. Also please remember to load all the drivers needed if you install a new OS. [...]

This is my third Nvidia Ion setup and I am rather suprised. My other two setups are Atom 330s (which does run a bit faster) not Atom 230s so I was a little apprehensive. I purchased this unit as a second HTPC to hook to a 1080i/720p 36" LCD in our loft. My main HTPC has all of the music, recorded tv, and movies on it's hard drives. I purchased this unit to stream video to over my Home Group (Windows 7 lingo for your secure home network). To start I registered the unit and upgraded it to Windows 7 Home x64 with one of my upgrades from a family pack. This can be easily done by copying the setup disk to an external hard drive and making the drive active. Then just change the bootup options in the BIOS (DEL key) to "Boot from USB" and the rest is a snap. Don't forget to switch it back after your it's first restart. There are detailed instructions on the web if you need help. I upgraded the memory to 2gb for $18 which again was very easy. I really had to search to determine the memory setup out of the box for this unit. It comes with 1gb (all on one SODIMM card) of PC2 DDR2 800 memory. So the upgrade was just an additional 1gb SODIMM card. It took 5 minutes. I also changed the BIOS setting to use 512k of the memory for the GPU instead of 256k. While in the BIOS I set my computer to automatically bootup at 7:00 am. This is one of the big advantages of using an Ion setup, it uses so little power (less than 30 watts) so that you can leave it on all day. Of course, it drops into sleep mode (SP3) when not in use and I turn it off myself at night. I also added a 1gb flash drive and set it up to be used as a FAT32 Ready Boost drive for caching. Just helps it to run a little faster. So my total setup to a Windows 7 Media Center was about $80 and well worth it. It works great on my TV and streams all my content easily over my Gigabit wired home network. With the coming release of Flash 10.1 this system will have no problem with web based HD also. I didn't try 32 bit Windows 7 so I can't say much about it. And this system has to have the extra 1gb to run 64 bit. It is realllllllly slow without it. I did also order a media center remote control for $25 which works great. Get an external DVD drive (or Blu-ray drive), an external data source, and a wireless keyboard/mouse combo (I was perfectly fine with the wired version it comes with since my kids will trash it anyway)and you have a very good computer for very little money. These systems have no problem with web surfing or MS Office 2007 so they make great kid/dorm computers. Also, I have no problems with the HDMI output to a Visio LCD. Enjoy!

ASUS UL30A-X5 Thin and Light 13.3-Inch Black Laptop - User Review

I recently purchased the Asus UL30A-X5 through Amazon and am very pleased with my decision. Let me first begin by briefly explaining what I was looking for in a new laptop, as I believe that will give the reader better information when deciding if this laptop is right for them. I am currently a student on a budget and was looking for the following: 1) Less than $700 in price, 2) Screen size between 13-14", 3) Windows 7 already installed (I didn't want an older computer with Vista that I would have to manually upgrade to Win 7 myself), 4) At least 320GB HD, 3 GB DDR3 RAM, and a Pentium Core 2 Duo SU7300 equivalent or greater processor, 5) Thin and light, and 6) 4+ solid hours of battery life. Although a netbook offers a small size and easy portability, I didn't want to sacrifice power and performance for everyday tasks. On the other hand, I also didn't want a large "desktop replacement" laptop that would be a hassle to carry around or difficult to take with me anytime I was away from home. In summary, I wanted a laptop that offered a good combination of power, performance, and size for my money. With that being said, here is my impression thus far after 2 days of using this computer:

Pros:

Performance: Able to smoothly and efficiently handle everything I have wanted to do to this point. It is even faster than my 3 year old 15.6" Dell Inspiron that I originally paid $1300 for at the time.
Size and Weight: Couldn't be happier with the sleek look and light weight. It looks even better in person than in the pictures.
Quality: Some people may think you are sacrificing quality for a laptop with these specs for under $700. I think this computer is built very well, and would argue it stands up to the much more expensive or name-brand models in the same class.
Warranty: The accidental protection warranty offers an extra piece of mind, which is also something not often included without an additional cost in other laptops.
Keyboard: Very easy to use, great design!
Mousepad: I love the textured touchpad on this model. It is difficult to see in the pictures, but the touchpad is actually not a traditional "pad", but a bunch of tiny dots that track the movement of your finger. Also, I really like the extra features such as being able to scroll up or down a page by using two fingers anywhere on the pad.

Cons:

The only thing that I am not too excited about is the small (or "smaller" when compared to my larger laptop) mouse buttons below the touchpad. This might be something that just takes a little getting used to, but it is more difficult to click the buttons than on my older laptop. Again, this is my first 13.3" laptop so it probably just comes with the nature of a smaller laptop and I will get used to it with time, but it's just something I wanted to point out if you are transitioning from a large laptop to a smaller one.

Overall, I couldn't be happier with my purchase. Sure, there are better laptops on the market as some will argue, but only if you are willing to spend $1000+. This computer definitely earns "5 stars" and I think anyone who is looking for an affordable, ultra-portable laptop with powerful performance will be very happy as well.

Acer Aspire Timeline AS5810TZ-4433 15.6-Inch HD Display Aluminum Laptop

This is an initial review of this product. The features that attracted me to it are 4GB RAM, a 320GB HDD, its lightweight (5.3 lb), and a 15.6 in. screen. The external brushed aluminum finish on this machine gives it a classy, upscale look. I was somewhat leery about the glossy screen but after using it I found its level of reflectivity to be acceptable...of course that could be different for other users. I believe what helps with this Acer unit is that the screen's bezel is matte finished which tones down the overall mirror effect. In addition the brushed aluminum finish of the keyboard surround also helps. While on the subject of the keyboard I have two negatives: the keys are glossy and very "slippery" and they are very flat. These two attributes make typing a bit difficult. After several hours, however, I had less difficulty with it and mistyping. If the keys were "cupped" I think that their "slipperiness" would be less noticeable.

The LED backlit LCD screen is very crisp and bright which gives it a visual "snappiness" that I like. Even with the power-saving features enabled the screen clarity is excellent. My unit arrived with no dead pixels.

I'm not much of a touch pad fan but I found this one to be an improvement over others I've used. It requires a very light touch and the multi-gesture feature seems to work reasonably well. (I still prefer using a mouse.)

Several CD's were played to test the speakers. While they weren't of "boom box" quality they did provide a sense of surround sound. Given their physical size, I felt their output was of acceptable quality. I've read reviews which criticized the low volume produced even when controls were set at 100%. Granted, you won't get rock concert volume, but the sound was pleasant.

Overall, at this point, I'm pleased with my purchase. As time permits, I'll update this review.

Sony VAIO VGN-NW310F/B 15.5-Inch Laptop (Black) - User Review

The keyboard on this notebook is the highlight, it has great feedback, separated chicklet keys, and has standard key placement (unlike some funky keyboards I have tried recently). That is to say, delete in top right, escape top left and CTL bottom left, with arrow keys on the bottom right. Also, it doesn't have the rarely needed numeric keypad, which is found on a lot of keyboards these days but requires your hand placement left of expected to type, which is what you do most of the time anyhow, right? I like this keyboard better than those on the legendary Thinkpads of old.

The screen is nice and sharp, I don't dislike the shiny screen as much as I had originally expected. Colors are great.

Hard drive has enough space for me, and the recovery procedure works well. I made the recovery CDs as well, but I normally just clone the HD onto and old drive to have a backup that way.

The computer has nice selection of features, minus the HDMI that has been mentioned already.

I am very fond of the trackpad .. I grew up with IBMs and prefer the pointer stick, but this is the nicest trackpad I've ever used. Buttons are in the right places and are the right size.

Speakers are OK, better than many budget laptops. The recessed keyboard is a nice looking design and the textured case is also quite cool looking. This certainly doesn't look like a budget laptop.

There are a few negatives however. First, Sony loads a ridiculous amount of "junkware" on this computer. Trial versions of this and that, utilities of dubious importance, and a bunch of other junk I see no need for. I took me about 45 minutes to get rid most of the egregious stuff. The processor is 64 bit, and the Win7 version is 64 bit, which makes sense given the 4GB ram installed. The processor does not have the Intel virtualization technology, but frankly having used Sun's free and excellent Virtual Box software for some time, which doesn't need this virtualization technology, I see no need for Intel's hardware virtualization.

Also, the computer ain't a light weight although it isn't a complete pig either.

I also installed XP Professional for giggles, the drivers are all available on Sony's site. Man, it really flies with 32 bit XP.

All in all a very nice budget laptop.

"Let me start by saying that I use my computer for much more than average daily use. I record multi track audio (i.e. home studio), as well as average daily tasks. I also work in a place that is very much pro Mac/anti PC. That's okay, I'm not biased either way, you just get more horsepower for your money with PC.

I downsized from my desktop system which was a Core 2 Duo with 2GB RAM on XP Pro. It was working, but I needed more horsepower (i.e. faster processor and more RAM), and I also figured a laptop that could suit my home studio needs would be perfect because I could then be mobile as well.

A lot of research went into purchasing a laptop. I left no stone unturned, and looked at ALL the models, up to a certain price range (under $1000), even models with lesser specs in certain areas than this one.

After much research, I decided this has everything I need. I've had it about three weeks now, and it's a great machine. Even some of my coworkers who prefer Macs said it's a nice laptop, and we all know computers where I work. After seeing the specs and the pricetag on this, they agreed that I did well.

My only gripe about it is that because it's a Vaio, it comes with TONS of extra Vaio software (as well as other trial software, and other programs that I have no use for). Three weeks later, I'm still experimenting with which Vaio software I should and should not uninstall. Some Vaio programs are necessary to operate things like the function keys, where others are not necessary. I will not post a list here, but search out the individual programs and make your own decision. Other than that, this thing ROCKS!!! Nice clear graphics, fast processor, good RAM (I plan to expand mine up to the allowable 8GB though), and totally KILLS my old Core 2 Duo machine. I was able to pull up sessions from my external hard drive after installing my recording software, and sessions that would nearly max out my Core 2 Duo machine barely had this computer running at 50% system resources. Beautiful, just what I needed. The hyper threading on the new Core i series is amazing.

I bought an e-SATA express card to use with the card slot to stream my external hard drive, I run an audio interface off the firewire port, and an iLok. I'm also going to purchase a firewire express card with a Texas Instrument chipset in it to see which transfer rate is better between the e-SATA card and the FW card (it 'should' be the e-SATA, but I'm still going to try it). I also plan on purchasing a wireless mouse, full size keyboard, and 22" monitor, so basically this laptop will sit off to the side as I record, mix, and edit audio. This is everything I need at the moment, and is working out as an audio computer as good or better than I thought. I highly recommend it. Oh, and regarding the Vaio software - for the average user, most of it is actually pretty cool, I just like to run my machine as clean and lean as possible so that most of it's resources are available when it comes time to lay down audio tracks."

I've now spent the better part of a day playing with the new iPad, and while it excels in many things there are still some things anyone considering buying one should probably keep in mind.

First the good sides:

This thing is very fast, opening and closing applications is quick, the screen is incredibly responsive, there is no lag while typing, and the built in Safari browser does a great job of quickly loading even graphic intense pages.

The not so good sides:

As has been thoroughly pointed out, there is not presently much in the way of multitasking within the iPhone OS, but with most expectations pointing towards a summer release of OS 4.0 this might be remedied by mid summer, and almost certainly by a generation 2 release. That said, it should be kept in mind that on such a little screen being able to view multiple applications at once will likely never be something you'll use, and the speed by which you can open and close applications makes this less a headache than you might think. It isn't as fast as moving between open apps, but it isn't a deal breaker by any means. The lack of a camera in this generation is a little surprising, while I've purchased my iPad already, I honestly believe that with the number of competitors expected over the course of 2010 we're probably going to see a generation 2 by Christmas with a camera. It's still an amazing device, but the ability to video chat with it would definitely put it over the top, that's a feature worth waiting for. The lack of Flash support isn't as irritating as I expected it to be, but still something to consider. Many major sites have evolved to html5, or are in the process of doing so. This allows for full viewing by the Safari browser, and where it exists, it works great. The remaining sites still using Flash show up with annoying little boxes looking for a plugin that is likely never going to exist. If you spend a lot of time on flash heavy sites it really probably is worth considering holding out to see how the Slate/Android Tablets look in a few months, but if you're mostly just e-mailing and checking facebook (no Farmville) the lack of Flash support probably won't bother you too much.

As a laptop replacement:

The inclusion of the iWorks utilities gives this device a little bit of a laptop personality. Don't let that persuade you into believing that you don't need a computer though. You might be able to get away with ditching a laptop if all you really do is e-mail or very light word processing, but if you do anything more than that you'll like the freedom and ease a full computer offers for more complex tasks. That said, this device is a tremendous leap towards a future tablet style device that may very well be a replacement for your computer, but for now it is more of a casual use device than something you can really expect to do substantial work with. I have put together a presentation in keynote, which was easy enough to do, but pages isn't as intuitive as I'd have liked, and taking lengthy notes or writing long letters/e-mails/reports will probably make it worth considering buying either the keyboard dock or the wireless bluetooth keyboard.

Battery life seems to live up to the claims, I managed to get about 7 hours before getting the 20% remaining battery life indication, which puts it about right for 10 hours or so of total use. One very important thing to realize about charging the device is that presently (at launch) there is some issues with charging via USB from many computers. The iPad is different than other iPod products, it requires a bit more power to charge up, and unfortunately most USB ports aren't set up to support that higher power draw. This is something that may be fixed in a firmware update to allow for a slower charge, or it may simply be that you'll need to either rely on a new Mac (seems like they can handle the power issue) or rely on the wall charger. Just don't be surprised if you plug it into your computer and it doesn't show that it is charging.

All in all, the iPad is an impressive device that might make for a reasonable replacement of a netbook for casual users. For people who need something to really do a lot of work on, you may find that for the price that a netbook or laptop still offers the better value for your needs. Future generations of this device will probably transition into fitting that market better than this first generation. However, if you're an avid reader, casual gamer, music fan, who doesn't do much more on the web than check a few sites, and e-mail. This thing is definitely worth considering! If you're on the fence, nothing about this product is so incredible as to justify running out and buying one right now, but it is worthy of your consideration if you're thinking you might like a tablet style device. I definitely would encourage you to go play with one at best buy or an apple store to get a feel for it. With a number of competitors due out over the next few months we're likely to see some price movement, or a second generation release, so it may be worth it to wait it out a little while.

One final note, the screen is absolutely gorgeous while it is turned on. It is crisp, bright, and very easy to see from any angle. But when you turn it off, every finger print and swipe is suddenly very visible (while it is on the light is bright enough you don't see them fingerprints). If you are a neat freak, or just hate finger prints on your devices you'll have to invest in some microfiber cloths or get used to using your shirt sleeve!

In conclusion, it's a lot of fun, and I'm not the least bit sorry to have bought one. It does many things, and over the next months will do many more. If you think you want one, go play with one, and if you don't want to wait for a next generation this one is definitely awesome. If you have specific needs that aren't really addressed in this generation or by apple, don't let the hype or peer pressure bully you into this one, there are a number of devices coming with great potential, one of those might be a better fit.

Amazing little guy
I bought the blue version of this Acer One with 512mb ram and 8GB SSD at a local store instead of this white one because for a clumsy and lazy guy like me, it's gonna turn black in a few weeks. This thing is super small compared to the pictures. Lets say a regular piece of paper will swallow it whole. I am a windows guy because I'm used to it, but I am starting to love Linux on this netbook.

There is an "advanced" mode on this netbook to enable all the features of Linpus such as add and removing programs. To do this, open a terminal(Files > My Documents to open the File Manager. Then go to File > Terminal.) and type in "xfce-setting-show" without the quotation. Click on Desktop to get to the Desktop Preferences and click on the Behavior tab. Now check the "Show desktop menu on right click" option and close the window. Now you will see a menu every time you right click on the desktop. You can also add icons of the newly installed programs to the desktop; YouTube can help you with that.

With the netbook in advanced mode, it is so much fun to use; it's the same as a fully loaded laptop. The screen is very bright and nice, the lid is nice and glossy but can attract finger prints initially. The keyboard is definitely better than the Asus EEE PC that I've used before. However, the touchpad buttons on the sides take some time to get used to. The Speaker is on the bottom of the laptop so don't expect much out if it because it's not that loud, but i use headphones so that doesn't bother me. WiFi seems to be stable and has not disconnect since the day i bought the netbook(a week ago). The Intel Atom CPU is better than i thought, i can multitask on this netbook with no problems. Surfing, listening to music on Amarok and installing a program at the same time with ease. Linux will boot up in under 15 seconds every time, and programs open responsively - very speedy little guy.

The included OpenOffice is very nice, I prefer that over MS Office any day. If space is a problem, the Acer One has a dedicated SDHC storage expansion slot to add SD/HC cards in and also a 5-1 card reader for additional SD or other cards. The only disappointing thing about this netbook is the battery life. Though not really bad, it is still short for a netbook. You get about 3 hours max on minimal usage, over 2 hours for watching a video and almost 2 hours on high performance with WiFi on. I am planning to buy a 6 cell or additional 3 cell battery later on; that will solve the battery life problem. The quality on this netbook is top notch!

Initially I planned to install windows XP, but now I don't think I will because I am having so much fun with Linux and Windows XP is just dull looking and boring. But that's just a personal preference of course. If you wish to install XP, you can plug in an external CD drive or make a bootable flash drive(google for instructions)

Is it possible to be in love with a laptop?

I had bought the asus eee pc 4 gb. I got it and at first, I absolutely LOVED it. Then, the webcam started messing up, the voice command was very sketchy, and the internet wireless was also sketchy. So, I returned the Asus and tried out this little laptop. Right from the start, it looked much more solid than the Asus, and just like a higher quality laptop. I brought it home and it picked up my wireless right away. The startup is VERY fast--probably about the same amount of time as the Asus (20 seconds) or less.
The setup and programs are much clearer than the Asus ones even though they both use Linux. The webcam is also easier and seems to be better than that of the Asus. Other things included on the Acer are: a messenger program, lots of fun games, email, Openoffice 2.3 (a writng program--like microsoft word), powerpoint presentations, and address book,calender, spreadsheets, an RSS reader (for reading the news I presume--i havent tried it out yet). This little computer is much easier to type on than the asus eee pc is, and is about 2 lbs. too. It's still very small, but easy to use and a larger screen than the asus eee pc. The Acer is VERY fast. Anyways, I LOVE THIS COMPUTER! I really don't realize how small it is when I'm actually using it-- it really feels like a normal sized pc. :) bibi, and good luck with your search!

Grrrreat product .. could be faster though
I am very happy with the R2HV i purchased. The screen is very clear. It comes with 2 batteries, 2 stylus, mouse, carry case. The speed is ok, it could be faster. The built in GPS receiver is great when paired with the correct software. The key issue is the OS. it is not product specific but i think that the Vista is slowing it down and the main cause for some glitches. The packing it came in was very nice. When i unpacked it everything was great except for one of the rubber pads of the main battery was missing. It is not a huge issue, just irritating as it wobbles on most surfaces now. The supplier on Amazon who supplied the UMPC, Computer brain , couldn't help out with this issue claiming that they have no replacement parts. Dissapointing however not critical. Overall i guess it is great value for money. Highly recommended.

The best UMPC on the market at the moment
I've seen many UMPCs, considering all their prices, this one beats them all. you could spend twice as much and get one with a Core Solo CPU, but seriously speaking, the centrino CPU in this machine will outdo most, if not all current UMPC CPUs.

Battery life is ok, could be longer. The 4 cell pack lasts about 2 hours under heavy use. The amount of accessories that come with this machine is insane. GPS antenna for the gps, usb converters, everything except a portbar and foldable keyboard.

The Best UMPC in The Market for the price
I have been reviwing UMPCs and i found that the Asus R2hv was the best in function and price. I have tried Other brands well known, very expensive but yet the asus was the best. Display is very good 7inch screen, a lot of connecting ports are available, comes with the whole set of accessories you dont have to buy anything else(except for the screen protector) and the most important feature is the speed and RAM which are a problem in other brands of UMPC with Windows Vista and of this Asus company earlier R2h model.
The only bad thing after 2 weeks of use is that the Wifi reception is weak compared to my HP laptop.
So if anybody is considering buying a verygood UMPC with windows Vista and reasonable price i strongly recommend this Asus.

Not PERFECTO but overall great machine! Bravo Sony!
I have VAIO VGC-LS35E model which is slightly different: it have more powerful processor Core2 Duo T7200 2.0 MHz, larger hard drive 320GB 7200RPM SATA and Vista Premium. Kind of difficult to figure out whole setup but finally it's on desk, looks stylish and smooth. Laptop-like keyboard, switches off automatically if you forget to do. Had to replays that Sony calls mouse with Logitech MX Revolution Wireless, rechargeable battery lasts for more than a week. It is really a bomb! Nice features like Build-in Wi-Fi, memory card reader, TV tuner, Web Cam, Remote, USB and FireWire ports, overall great entertainment pc!
Pros: all in one, lots of power, roomy hard drive, build-in Wi-Fi, TV tuner and remote.
Cons: lack of documentation, detailed instructions how to pair keyboard and mouse, only 4 USB ports and One FireWire, glossy Display which it makes it difficult to use in bright room, cheap speakers, difficult to read keyboard display (Caps Lock on/off), not upgradable memory or anything, noisy DVD drive.

Great unit
Was a lenghty decision between the iMac and Sony desktop! Though, I'm incredibly happy I decided on the Sony. Amazon was the best price and free shipping. It arrived only a few days after I ordered. Very, very and very satisfied with the product and Amazon.

So far so good.
I have only had the computer for a month and so far I am pleasantly surprised. No issues except for the lack of instructions for pairing up the remote keyboard and mouse to the computer. Yes, they do have these instructions online but how can you get online without a keyboard and mouse! It was no big deal though, I just called customer service, (fairly quick), and was told there was a switch on the back of the computer that had to be reset and then you had to immediately reset the switch on the keyboard and mouse. Still, it wouldn't kill them to include a booklet. I have already had to replace the batteries in the mouse but the keyboard is still fully charged. It may have been because they come with cheap batteries.

Great Computer. Outstanding HP Technical Support
This is my firts HP and I'm happy how slim and compact it is, not to say about the low noise. The first boot, however, took long minutes before the Vista could login. And everytime I tried to boot, use the Blu-Ray drive and even some websites would halt the system for long 2 minutes. After serveral e-mails exchanged with HP Technical Support, I finally found out that the Blu-Ray drive had something wrong. I tried to unplug it and everything came smooth. HP then replaced my defective Blu-Ray drive and now the PC is wonderful. And after the experience I had with HP customer support, I have no doubt my next PC will be an HP again.

My only complaint is the fact HP will not give full warranty for overseas, as this specific product is not supported by HP support in my country. I understand that, but the thing is HP in my country would not even hear my problem (which was initially the non-ability to create the Recovery Discs, which there is nothing related to the hardware, but with the software). HP in the US, however, understood completely the fact that I lived overseas and tried their best to match my schedule while I was back to the US.

If only it were very very quiet ...
I had to send it back. I didn't really want to because I loved the form factor and the specs. The blu-ray DVD alone means you saved $400 for a standalone blu-ray DVD player, and the built in memory and 500 gigs hard drive are fabulous. However, went I installed in the bedroom, it had a fan hum that was too loud for that use. It would have been okay in an office or a living room, it wasn't that loud, but you can't have that steady hum in the bedroom where you sleep. When everything else was quiet, we heard it way too much.

Mac Pro Quo
This Mac gives you what you pay for. It works great right out of the box.
Adding more Ram and such is suggested based on what you need it for.
It runs quiet and the only problems I have are due to the software.

Wicked Fast
I purchased the item from Amazon b/c i'm a Prime member, quick shipping. I upgraded the standard build to have an additional TB of hd space (www.macsales.com) and added 8gb of ram. the thing is wicked fast. The sound of the machine is also very low, which is great. I have parallels running my windows vm's (xp and vista) and am now testing out fusion. I added a 2nd video card (same as the one it came with) and now have 3 monitors (fusion beta 2.0 support multi monitor) but i'm not super happy with the speed of the machine which i exported (using the fusion VM Ware export tool). I think it could also be a beta thing. All in all, i used to be a Dell guy and now for the money i'm definately happy with the Mac Pro b/c for about 1k less i have an 8 core power house. I expect this will by my workhorse computer for some time.

Great machine
This is a well-built, fast, quiet machine. I know of nothing better in a desktop computer, if the price is not an issue. It runs applications quickly. Adding or changing hard drives is a moment's work. The fit and finish of the computer is unparalleled.

The machine has 8 cores but today's software does not really make use of all this power. Perhaps tomorrow's will.

I recommend this computer without hesitation.

Excellent Hardware Engineering

HP has finally done a truly excellent job of hardware engineering on their second generation touch-based system. It's stylish and functional and well equipped. And cost is reasonable - especially when you consider how much just a large touch screen would cost all by itself.

An e-SATA connector would have been nice though and the HP touchsmart suite software is typical HP software - fairly mediocre. I disabled it and use the native Windows touch functionality. HP would do themselves and everyone a favor by unleasing their multi-touch API so (other than HP) developers could crank out killer apps for their new box. Probably moot when Windows 7 is released, but in the meantime they'd be boosting their sales by evangelising touch-based software development for their machines.

I bought the hp touchsmart and the touchscreen did NOT work at all.
After hours and hours of tech support, rebooting, doing system restore it still would not work. I sent it back frustrated and disappointed.
I bought another HP product a number of years ago and had a similar problem. It never worked even after sending it back for repair. I vowed I would NEVER buy another HP product. The touchsmart was SO nice in the store, I decided to give HP a second chance. I regret it because it never worked.
I don't know why a company would create products that look so good on paper and work in store displays but don't work when I when I got them home.
I am SO dissappointed in HP for all the frustration and grief they have caused me.

I have been impressed with the tech specs and reviews on this system, so checked it out at the store (Office Depot). I especially like the standard 4gb RAM configuration, the built-in webcam, and the parking place for the keyboard. I was disappointed, however, in the looks of the system for the following two reasons: (1) the touch screen is very high glare and (2) the enclosure is high gloss black plastic. (Who in global marketing decided that all consumers prefer high gloss black on electronics. Is it just me that doesn't like this? What happened to smudge-free matte black enclosures and anti-glare screens?) I'll wait for the update. Thanks HP!
